KIBCA Educational Scholarships - 2011 Applications

NOTE: The 2011 Scholarships are closed and decisions have been made on the distribution of funds. The information below is provided as background information only.

Indigenous Kolombangaran parents can now apply for educational scholarships for 2011.

There are $800 scholarships for students in Forms 6 and 7, $1,000 for vocational, SICHE and University students and $750 for those in Forms 4 and 5. Unfortunately, due to limited funds, only the best students for Forms 4 and 5 will receive a scholarship.

The scholarships reward local landholders for protecting the area above 400m altitude from logging and mining. $50,000 has been provided by SICCP (funded by American Museum of Natural History) and KFPL. This is the third year it has been offered.

Get you application form from the KIBCA office at Ringgi, or KFPL Security at Poitete or dowload the application form in pdf format.

KIBCA must receive applications by 4:30pm, Mon 28 Feb 2011.

See below for more details about the scholarships and the application process.

Application Criteria:

Parents of 2011 students may only apply if:

  • At least one parent is a Kolombangara Indigenous descendent
  • At least one parent is a member of KIBCA (costs $5 for lifetime membership) and
  • Both parents live on Kolombangara Island

Scholarship Priorities

Scholarships for 2011 are provided in the following categories, in priority order:

  1. Forms 6 and 7 - $800 per student
  2. Vocational college, SICHE and University of South Pacific - $1,000 per student
  3. Forms 4 and 5 - $750 per high performing student (performance based on 2010 end of year school report, to be provided or sighted as evidence)

$50,000 is available for distribution in 2011 and will be allocated according to the priority order above. KIBCA expects to be able to fully fund all valid Form 6 and 7, vocational, SICHE and USP applications. Payment will be made to form 4 and 5 applicants based on academic performance until all remaining funds are spent. Payment will be made direct to the school or institution by April 2011 and will not be made if the student is expelled before the school fee is paid. KIBCA will notify parents of its decision.

Scholarships Support Conservation

Scholarships are provided for five years as part of a commitment by Kolombangara Island landholders to protect the forests above 400m from logging and mining.

The 2011 scholarships are made possible through the generous support of SICCP (funded in 2011 by the American Museum of Natural History) and KFPL. Additional funders are also being sought.
